Love vs Infatuation: How Do You Distinguish Between the Two?

Love and Crush are strong emotions a person feels towards the one he or she is falling in love with. Love and Infatuation are different because of the reality of the love, the intensity, and the ultimate result. The fact is, the two types of intense feelings are quite different, although they are fairly easy to confuse. Love and Attraction may both be intense emotional feelings towards someone, but it is their natures that makes them distinct.

Love and Infatuation are both accompanied by intense feelings, attractions, and emotions. Infatuation, in contrast, can begin with a physical attraction that gives a sense of being in love. It may start with physical attraction and can provide an emotional thrill of being with a person. When talking about attraction, one can experience high levels of longing for the person.

Every relationship is different, so you are not sure whether you are experiencing the strong feelings of true love or temporary passion feelings from being infatuated. While real, pure love between two people often leads to a long-term commitment, Infatuation can lead only to some commitments, on a very rare occasion. With infatuation, the relationship will progress in a quick, intense manner, while with love, it will progress healthily and slowly. Infatuation is intense and brief (it can only last for a few minutes), whereas love may last for a lifetime.

Love can be described as feelings of intense attachment to another person. Real love is giving to another and caring, whereas crush is usually more focused on self, like how much better I feel and more enthusiastic I am about this other person. Love is grounded in a deeper understanding of a person whereas infatuation just happens to happen upon meeting someone, or after learning a little bit about them. Love goes beyond sexuality and idealization; infatuation is either physical or about imagined ideas about the person.

Unlike crushes and states of infatuation, love actually sees and accepts its object of affection. Love may even include feelings of excitement to be with another person; however, love generally allows one to feel fulfilled within ones relationships, without constant longings for that other person or the worry it might bring about your inability to know his/her feelings. Sometimes, not only are you enamored of the person, but being so perpetually bewildered and hungry for love makes you suggest that even the smallest feelings of pleasure in someone can be love. These feelings are really infatuation coming disguised as something ostensibly loving.

That is because infatuation makes you feel like such an insane person you may think that this is love, when that is probably not the case. Infatuation may seem like an intensely passionate love, but if it suddenly goes away, that is just infatuation, not real love. Infatuation involves a sudden rush of feelings, whereas love requires time and building. Love usually unfolds over time, and there are plenty of documented cases of people loving someone they may feel no physical attraction for.
